Review of
Astyanax (NES)
By Ryan Wellman

This game was one of the first I ever played. At the time it seemed magical to me, but then again I was a gamer in training, and very young. This game is about a teenager who is somehow drawn into another world by a young mysterious woman who is in trouble. You must become the hero, and your only guide is a fairy named Cutie. And your name is Astyanax. Who would name their kid that? Besides the weird title, this game was very different for its time.

There were three meters in the game; power, health and magic. You could cycle between your spells at any time, and certain ones would help you in a situation that seemed impossible. On each level there would be monsters, items and bosses. Some of the items gave you power, health, or magic and others changed your weapon. With each new weapon your stats would change. There were three weapons, which were ax, spear, and sword. That’s the order you would get them, and the only way you could go back for a different one was to talk to Cutie. She could also refill your magic.

The simplicity of this games made it enjoyable, but in no way easy. The thing I thought that made this game, was the story and the bosses. The music was not too awful, but it wasn’t that great either. Some of the time while going through the level, there would be too many enemies on the screen and the game would slow and the sprites would glitch a little. If you can get past the fact that it’s an older game, you will have a lot of fun with this one.
