Bomberman is the bomb. When it crossed over to the 3d era with the N64, it did
not disappoint. It was as addictive and fun as before. They throw in an all
new story, one that probably doesn’t make a difference either way, but
the story is not the best part about this game. It was four players, and when
you got four good people bombing away, it got a little intense.
The game is simple enough to learn. Your bomberman can lay bombs. You try to
explode as much stuff as possible, and then collect items that may pop out.
The items will let you carry more bombs, make your explosions bigger, give you
a detonator, allow you to kick the bombs, or skulls. The skulls are toxic sometimes,
and other times they can help you out. When you pick one up, it randomly chooses
what should happen from a list of about ten things, such as making you incredible
fast and small, or making it so you cannot lay bombs. Another feature in this
game allows you to pick up a bomb and pump it up. The bigger it gets pumped,
the bigger the explosion.
The story is about a planet of bombermen that is attacked by several powerful
robots. There are about 5 worlds where you must go to battle the drones and
solve a variety of puzzles to defeat the boss. Along the way there is plenty
of hidden goals and items you can find. If you have a memory card for the 64,
you can customize your own character with all kinds of different suits. The
only problem with it was that the N64 memory cards weren’t all that reliable.
The multiplayer is awesome. A kid could learn how to play it, but it takes real
good hand eye coordination to master it. It is a fun party game, and if the
people get as addicted as I did, then they will play for hours. There are a
variety of different stages, all of them with their own countdown to destruction.
When the countdown reaches zero, the playing field will alter. Sometimes blocks
will fall, sometimes water will fill, and other times there will be tornadoes.
I highly recommend this game.
