Review of
Dynasty Warriors 3 (PS2)
By Ryan Wellman

When I first saw this game on the shelf I believed it to be a new fighting game, probably one trying to be just like the others. I was horribly wrong. This game is completely different from any I’ve ever played. The best word to describe it would be WAR, and as they say, war is hell.

This game takes place in the time that Japan was going through some serious homicidal tendencies. By the number of soldiers that disintegrate into the ground, it would seem that all humans became extinct a long time ago. There were sometimes endless amounts of them, almost all of them superhuman. Superhuman meaning that they could get cut to pieces by a blade swinging like a lawnmower, and then get up ready for more.

By the looks of this game, it’s very long. Each battle can last at least an hour, with cut scenes thrown in at seemingly random times. Your fingers will go sore, and if you are addicted enough, they may bleed and eventually rot off. This does not actually happen. Some may become so addicted they will invest in robot hands, dramatically increasing reaction time. Robot hands not included. For me however, the story didn’t grab me. I mean yea, they’re fighting, and yes, everyone is mad at the red guys, but why?

There is a limit to the amount of attacks you have in this game, and that was very disappointing. The attacks you do have are pretty good though, especially the super moves which can attack a glob of enemies over and over again. Very UBER super. Then there is the ability to use a bow and arrow, something that seemed thrown in at the last minute.

Even with all those super attacks, this game is very difficult. I seemed to get beat on every level I chose, with every character. I beat one level, but I had to constantly keep pushing the same button, move to where some more people were, then push that button some more. By the time the battle was over, I realized that this was a game meant to be played over a long period of time. Like war, this game is hell.

I must apologize, for I did not give this game a chance. I rented it, and therefore, did not get to see the scope of the game. I recently have got the chance to play the next installment to the series. After I played it for a while, I really loved it. It made me want to rent this game all over again, perhaps even buy it. This game may be for you, but then again it may not. Either way, it deserves a look.
