Review of
Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga (GBA)
By Ryan Wellman

There’s no denying it, there is still a lot of spunk in the Mario Brothers. The release of the all new Superstar Saga is proof that Mario will never die. They’ve brought back a lot of classic greatness in this one, having everyone from Yoshi to Bowser, and a lot of new characters. Even the dodo bird from the second Mario has her own appearance in this all new quest for peace.

This game takes place in a strange world full of coffee beans and jokes, as Mario and Luigi must save a kingdom once again. Princess Peach’s voice has been stolen, as well as the all mighty Beanstar. The dangerous new enemy Cawletta has plans on unleashing darkness upon the world, and that’s where you come in. You must aid both of the brothers in this all-new RPG adventure madness, which never once goes dull.

There are many plot twists in this game, and so I won’t ruin the story, but trust me when I say that once you think it’s over, it’s only just beginning. The majority of the time you will either be solving puzzles or battling enemies. The B button controls Luigi in a battle, and the A button controls Mario. Timing is critical at some points, and with good reflexes you can dodge or counter any attack. Attacking can also be more rewarding with good timing and fast thinking. Certain enemies are critically vulnerable to certain attacks, and other enemies may be very resistant to the same attack.

There is the classic jump attack, which is always useful except when fighting a spiky opponent. The Brothers will eventually get hammers and magical hand powers which adds to the variety. As well as all the solo attacks, there are bros. attacks which use up your BP, and combines both the brothers’ powers for a devastating attack. There are items throughout the game as well, which give you certain advantages in a fight, such as the spike badge which allows its wielder to deal critical jump damage to spiny creatures. Some equipment is harder to obtain, and may require you to collect rare beans which are spread throughout the land.

This game is a must have, and even the music is great. It’s all new and yet there is a touch of old school to it. This game was designed for use in the Gameboy Player, but looks just as great and smooth on the GBA. It also contains a version of the original Mario Brothers game, where you have to use the POW blocks to destroy the monsters coming out of the pipes. You do not want to pass up this one, and will make a great addition to your collection.
