Review of
Super Mario Brothers 3 (NES)
By Ryan Wellman

If asked what my favorite Mario game of all time would be, I would have to admit that Mario 3 still holds a place in my heart. This game was revolutionary through my eyes. It seemed like a brand new Mario, and it made me respect those plumbers. There were so much new stuff to this game, awesome graphics, amazing secrets, and all new powers.

The first time I played this game it seemed to me like Mario on hyper juice. It was more real and intense than any adventure game before it. It was almost unbeliveable that it was the same system as the first and second ones. It was smooth, it was rounded, it was shaded, and the world around was tangible and more organic than the blocky greatness of the original.

So many secrets were hidden in this game, in almost every level there would be a new easter egg that was unseen. Hidden pipes in the middle of the sky, vines, whistles, 1-ups, a boot, and running behind the background. There was a part just like in the first one, where you could get as many extra lives as you wanted. In one part of the game, all of the monsters were extremely huge, and in another part there would be a sun that would come down from the sky to burn you. I will still find something new everytime I play it. The last time I used one of the whistles to warp, I noticed that the level selection map was actually called World 9.

Just thinking about all the new looks of Mario and Luigi gives me great memories. Just like the original there was the little Mario, the big Mario, the invincible star powered Mario, and the flower powered Mario. All new to the scene was the leaf, granting the brothers a new attack as well as flight. The bear suit, a suit which also gave flight and the tail attack, but also a statue transformation which only lasted for so long, but could be used to destroy or defend. The frog suit was an awesome way to hop across the ground or swim through the water. The frog could jump, and when it came to swimming he was a pro. The hammer suit gave the awesome hammer throwing ability, which would destroy almost everything. Then, the mysterious power wings. These wings were kinda like cheating, and gave the brothers infinite flight for one level.

The music was also very fresh, less digital, and more smooth. There were ten times more levels than either of the games before it, and there was humor as well. Mario could leap farther than ever if he took a running head start, and he even put his arms out like a bird. He did backflips when he had invincibility, and the amount of new monsters in this game were incredible. Each new monster had their own patterns, and at first it was almost impossible to master. Today, I could beat it in less than an hour, because they were so innovative that they put in cheat codes that didn’t ruin the game, but in fact they made it flexible. This game will always be a classic.
