Review of
Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance (Gamecube, XBox, PS2)
By Ryan Wellman

Mortal Kombat is one of the best fighting game series on this planet, and Midway proved themselves once again with the new Deadly Alliance. The ever-changing story has engulfed many gamers, and each character has their own personalities and talents. Deadly Alliance is definitely a nice addition to the series.

The premise is, Shang Tsung and Quan Chi have teamed up and are wreaking havoc on both our world and Outworld, starting with the decapitation of Shao Kahn and the death of Lui Kang. That’s right, the hero is dead, proving once and for all that Earth is shit out of luck.
This game is realistic in many ways, using actual fighting styles instead of made up ones like in Soul Calibur. They’ve also beefed up all the characters, giving extra definition and detail in the muscles and smoother movements. Of course this game wouldn’t be Mortal Kombat without a little bit of unrealism. Shooting fireballs, ice, or lightning attacks are a must, and they’ve added a few changes to that as well. The blood is brought in by the gallons like a Dead Alive game or something, and I was lovin every minute of it. These fighters must have four or five hearts, because if I lost as much blood as they do I’d be a shriveled up Hilton sister with nothing but skin and bones.

I love this game, and found its story the most engaging of all the Mortal Kombats. It includes the arcade mode, which is just basically like the other games, holding true to tradition. Then there’s Konquest where you take your choice of character through training and such, learning all the moves and combos for each character along the way. This is a great feature, and really helped me to get used to the combo system. In both of these modes you earn money, which when spent wisely, will unlock stages, characters, costumes, movies, and much more. I think my favorite video to unlock was “Cooking with Scorpion”, which was funny as hell.

Each character has ups and downs, as well as three different styles. The third style for each is usually a weapon, and I like weapons. Certain characters can even take their blades and impale the opponent, causing them to bleed and lose life for the rest of the fight. Fatalities are a must as always, but each character only has one. Oh well though, the first Mortal Kombat was the same way and I was happy with it.

I don’t have much bad to say about this game, except it would’ve been awesome if the soundtrack had a little more. Don’t get me wrong, the soundtrack was sweet, but it would’ve been cool if they had some Psychopathic in there, even though we all know that will never happen.

The newest game will be called Mortal Kombat: Deceptions, and should be out this October. To see a preview of it visit http://mortalkombat.midway.com/. It’s lookin pretty sweet.
