Review of
Shining Force: The Legacy of Great Intention (Sega Genesis)
By Ryan Wellman

Shining Force was a freaking awesome game. It was a classic in my mind, and first came out for the Sega Genesis in 1993. Now they are remaking it for the handheld GameBoy Advanced. If it’s anything like the first one, I believe it will put Final Fantasy Tactics to shame.

T he Shining Force story was about a terrible evil that had been awakened after a long slumber. This evil was named Dark Dragon, and it is up to you to find the Sword of Light to destroy this terrible dragon. Along the way you meet up with many characters that have personalities of their own. Some are enemies and some join up with you. You eventually build a small army of your best warriors, mages, and the hero.

This game is a tactical turn based RPG game. Each character that you meet throughout the game has their own advantages and disadvantages. There are so many different people, that you may meet different ones if you play twice, and will most likely have a completely different army by the end. Each character learns new abilities and grows in power and skills. Eventually they can be promoted to a higher level being. They can use different weapons and items after being promoted as well.

This game is viewed from above like a Zelda or early Final Fantasy game. During combat though, it has a whole new feel, and actually shows the characters swinging, casting a spell, blocking, or whatever. I cannot explain it exactly, but they presented this game in a great way.

I love this game, and have nothing bad to say about it other than it is an older game. Do not let that stop you from playing it however, because I love playing it every time. There are many different games in the Shining Force series, but I personally have not been able to play them all. Shining In the Darkness and Shining Force 2 however are also very good games if you like RPGs.

The remake for Shining Force is coming out for the Game Boy Advanced. It is named Resurrection of the Dark Dragon Ships. There are a couple more characters to choose from, and improved graphics, so I believe that it will be a must buy.

Altogether this game gets a 10 out of 10
