Review of
Spiderman 2 (Gamecube, PS2, XBox)
By Ryan Wellman

The webslinger is back, and this time, he has some tricks up his sleeves. He’s gonna need every single one of them too, since he’s battling the mighty Doctor Ock. The all knew Spiderman 2 for the Gamecube is based on the new hit movie, and it’s a big improvement to all other Spiderman games. There are however, some differences between the game and the movie, so the storyline isn’t completely ruined. In this game, you will see some characters that aren’t in the movie, such as Black Cat and Mysterio. Voices in this game were contributed by Tobey Maguire and Kirsten Dunst themselves, not to mention Bruce Cambell, the narrator.

The amount of control you have over Spiderman in this game was amazing, and I’d have to say, it was the best super hero game I’ve ever played. The work they put into the movements of spiderman was awesome, and reminded me of some parts of the movie. Not only could you crawl up buildings, but you could sprint up them as well. If you hold in the jump button you can execute a high jump, and let me tell you, I’ve never seen such a high jump. Spiderman also had an infinite amount of run. The number of ways you could shoot the web was sweet as well. As you progress through the game you increase your web swing level, gained new moves, and even air tricks. One move which I really liked was one in which Spidey webs up his enemy and hangs them from a lightpost.

The more you get used to this game the more you realize the amount of stuff you can do. I had fun just running up buildings, nose diving to the ground, and then at the last second swinging on a web. It was great. While you are in between missions you will have to search for people in trouble. They are everywhere, and they always have something for you to do. Usually it’s to beat up some thugs, but occasionally you will have to save someone from falling off a building or take someone to the hospital. However, none of that is as important as saving the balloons that children let go of. If I could do that, I would, but Spiderman already does, so I guess I don’t have to. Thank you Spidey.

While in combat you will have a slew of combos you can pull off. You can tie up an enemy and throw them into the air, just to jump up and smack em down into the concrete. You can pull them towards you like Scorpion, or even through them side to side. Also, while fighting you will have to different versions of the spidey senses. The first one let’s you dodge attacks whenever your head flashes, and then comeback and attack in a multitude of different ways. The second one slows everything down so that you can see every movement around you, and you also have different moves that you can pull off and show your opponent who’s the boss.

Of course you can’t have all this good without some bad, but there really wasn’t much. The first cinematic scene however was kinda crappy, at least on my Gamecube. It showed a view of the city, but the buildings were only part way there, and certain sides of it would simply disappear. Also, occasionally while talking to someone on the sidewalk, the citizens would walk through each other, and I even once found a person stuck in a tree. I couldn’t help him, and just walked away. Probably the worst thing about this game was that Peter constantly just talked to himself, over and over again, but that was easily fixed by turning it down.
